Outschool Welcomes Andy Chiu as Head of Engineering

Outschool is excited to announce that Andy Chiu will be joining as Head of Engineering in August. Andy brings over two decades of engineering leadership across some of the most influential technology companies, including Google and Instacart. He will lead Outschool’s Engineering organization as we scale The Global School to bring more personalized and empowering learning experiences to families worldwide.

Andy most recently served as VP of Engineering at Instacart, leading Ads Engineering to propel Instacart Ads into a premium marketplace for retail media. Before that, he spent more than 16 years at Google, where he drove cutting-edge advances in personalization, ML, and product technologies across Search and Ads, and led the transformation of Google for Education / Classroom into an intelligence-forward EdTech platform. His expertise spans deep systems architecturing, large-scale infrastructure, advanced ML modeling, data-driven quantitative analysis, and user-centric product engineering.

What makes Andy a uniquely powerful fit for Outschool is the way he connects engineering excellence with user experience and team culture. In early conversations with our team, Andy offered a clear insight: families don’t just need more learning choices, they need help navigating them. Reducing “mental overhead” for parents is key to unlocking engagement, and Andy has already begun exploring how agentic AI and other recent technology advances could do just that. His thinking centers on practical architecture, combining fine-tuned large language models with heuristic decision engines, a real-time feedback loop, and advanced personalization layers that adapt to family needs without sacrificing clarity or control.
